Een plaat vol puntje-van-je-stoelmuziek, dromerig en duister, maar ook scherp. Vol intelligent bedachte en eloquent uitgevoerde patronen enavukat ankara structuurverkenningen. Zachtmoedig en melancholiek. Alleen al de tegen elkaar opspringende, van elkaar afketsende, maar elkaar toch telkens weeravukat ankara opzoekende toetsakkoorden en -noten van Jozef Dumoulin en Fabian Fiorine zijn sensationeel. Met de talrijke verschuivingen in ritme en harmonie is de muziek verwant aan wat iemand als Steve Lehman vanuit New York probeert te bewerkstelligen, maar spontaner, minder cerebraal, meer geneigd het toeval haar werk te laten doen. Donnant suite à Tantric CollegeOcturn & The Tibetan Monks of Gyuto en 2016, qui était enregistré dans le monastère de Gyuto avec des moines bouddhistes, Songbook of Changes continue de fouiller les territoires de prédilection de cette formation belge qui a su créer une identité propre. A partir de configurations musicales privilégiant l’improvisation à l’intérieur de compositions souples mais précises, les musiciens déroulent des atmosphères nébuleuses où l’instabilité est un parti pris fort.S’appuyant sur des combinaisons de jeu issues des philosophies orientales et qui donnent la sensation que des phrases jaillissent à tous les instants de chaque instrument, la nouveauté de ce disque, qui s’inspire notamment du livre des transformations (Yi Jing), tient dans le souffle nouveau de la section rythmique - comparé aux anciens répertoires. Le groove puissant et hypermoderne de Jean-Luc Lehr (basse électrique) et Chander Sardjoe (batterie) a cédé sa place à un jeu plus nuancé et discontinu entretenu par les baguettes de Dré Pallemaerts (déjà présent sur le précédent disque) et la contrebasse de Clemens van der Feen.Sans verser dans le mainstream pour autant, on découvre alors une souplesse gracile, moins obsédante, qui évoque les placements d’un jazz plus traditionnel où les individualités sont valorisées. Tout cela est à prendre avec beaucoup de nuances : les ambiances irréelles restent de mise et les motifs décalés aux structurations algébriques permettent une vaste déclinaison des possibles. Les climats suspendus comme les parties plus nerveuses sont bien signées Octurn et les figures de danse que ne cessent d’entrecroiser les corps musicaux de Magic Malik, Jozef Dumoulin ou Fabian Fiorini , raviront celles et ceux qui sont impatients d’entendre comment une pensée complexe peut prendre une forme à la fois spirituelle et incarnée.par Nicolas Dourlhès // Publié le 23 septembre 2018

Après avoir connu de multiples incarnations en vingt ans d’existence, le collectif s’est resserré autour d’un quartette à deux claviers : un complice de longue date en la personne de Magic malik, et un nouveau venu dans leur univers, le
contrebassiste néerlandais Clemens Van der feen. Librement inspiré ( bien malin qui l’aurait deviné! ) par l’un des textes fondateurs de la civilisation
chinoise, le Livre des transformations, ce ‘songbook of changes’ développe une
musique aux contours mouvants et aux ressorts mystérieux, où textures acoustiques et électroniques tiennent une part égale. Jouant d’une tension subtile entre immobilité et motricité, aléatoire et préméditation, le sextette nous entraîne sur un chemin parfois déroutant mais toujours stimulant, manière de parcoursinitiatique dont il ne faut attendre d’autre illumination que la contemplation de son objet même. Avec Songbook Of Changes, le dernier album sorti chez W.E.R.F. Records, on ne déroge pas à la règle.Octurn nous a habitué à nous déshabituer. Avec eux, l’aventure est souvent déstabilisante, chaque fois différente et toujours frissonnante.Le collectif au line-up variable, emmené par Bo Van der Werf, en a fait du chemin depuis 1996, passant du M’Base à une musique très contemporaine via la musique aléatoire ou aux folklores imaginaires, poussant chaque fois un peu plus loin les expérimentations.Il y a quelque chose de l'ordre du sacré, du divin, de l’ésotérisme dans cette musique, comme dans celles d’Olivier Messiaen (dont l’influence a été majeure pour le groupe), de György Ligeti ou des musiques indiennes ou tibétaines…Octurn explore des harmonies toujours mouvantes, faites de couches et de structures libres et indépendantes. C’est un peu comme dans un jeu de domino : une idée en amène une autre qui en entraine une autre. Et tout peut arriver. Tout est une question d’équilibre, d’écoute, de lâcher prise.Dans Songbook Of Changes, chaque morceau est une sorte d’exercice, un travail sur les matières et les atmosphères. Parfois abstraite jusque dans les titres («Song 10», «Song 8», «Song 1» ou encore «m46664a»), souvent méditative et magnétique, la musique nous entraine dans un tourbillon de sensations étranges.Tout commence en douceur et en mystère («Song 10») sur des effets crachotants de Jozef Dumoulin. Puis, Fabian Fiorini, plaque des accords sur un motif répétitif, toujours flottant («Song 8»), avant que l’ensemble ne s’enflamme. Le drumming papillonnant de Dré Pallemaerts et la contrebasse discrète et parcimonieuse de Clemens van der Feen laissent le champ libre aux improvisations de Magic Malik à la flûte (et au chant fantomatique sur «Song 2») et à Bo Van der Werf au sax baryton insaisissable.Octurn enlève et allège sans cesse, travaille l’espace, le dépouillement, les silences et le vide plein d’âme. L’exact opposé de ce «vide abyssal» qu’avait un jour écrit un célèbre critique n’ayant sans doute pas tout à fait compris le sens de la démarche. On ne lui en voudra pas et le groupe avait d’ailleurs bien ri de cette description idiote.Ecouter Octurn, c’est prendre son temps et c’est oublier le temps. L'univers de chaque thème varie imperceptiblement, mettant en avant tantôt le piano, tantôt la flûte ou le sax. On passe de rythmes haletants («Song 14») à d’autres, totalement en apesanteur («Song 1»). Quant à «Red», «Black» et «Blue Tara», ils se dispersent sur l’album et distillent des sentiments apaisés, rageurs ou vibrants.Comme souvent avec Octurn, ce Songbook Of Changes demande à se laisser découvrir et se laisser vous imprégner pour pouvoir en apprécier les moindres petits bienfaits.Laisser vous faire.

Bo Van der Werf leverde hiervoor al het materiaal, een enkele keer samen met Fiorini.Octurn was van meet af aan een groep met een bijzondere bezetting die een eigen lingua franca hanteerde. Meer dan ooit is het hier een aftasten van grenzen en mogelijkheden, heel soms door een enkele muzikant die het initiatief neemt, meestal door het sextet gezamenlijk. Er ontstaat een continu clair-obscur spel van contrasten duidelijk geïllustreerd door de grote tegenstelling van de introverte openingstrack en het daaropvolgende nummer dat een stortvloed aan ideeën bevat die uiteindelijk aan elkaar gelinkt worden. Het steekspel van modules waarbij contemplatieve cellen ogenschijnlijk onafhankelijk staan van andere meer wervelende en dynamische eenheden, wordt over heel de cd doorgetrokken. Alles draait daarbij rond het met elkaar verbinden van ogenschijnlijk losse ritmische en harmonische patronen.

Achter de piano zit ontegensprekelijk Fabian Fiorini, zowat de grootmeester van de feilloze overgangen tussen hedendaags klassiek, jazz en improvisatie. Dré Pallemaerts is dan weer de magiër die door haast onhoorbare roffels en drumpunctuaties precieze accenten legt. Jozef Dumoulin plaatst de codes van de 21e eeuw die weliswaar aansluiten bij een reeds bestaande traditie. Hij maakt echter geen gebruik van voorgeprogrammeerde stukken maar speelt alles live. Bassist Clemens van der Feen tekent op zijn beurt enkel de hoogst noodzakelijke baslijnen. Bo Van der Werf en Magic Malik zijn de vertellers van dienst zonder helemaal in de rol van solisten te kruipen. Hun melodische interventies smelten samen met de groepsklank. Op die manier blijven alle muzikanten op eenzelfde hiërarchisch niveau.Het lijkt erop dat Octurn een aantal cd’s opnam bij andere labels om met een doorgedreven abstracte instelling terug te keren naar het huis waar alles begon. Nog meer dan vroeger kunnen we spreken van een syncretisme tussen hun eigen wereld en de complexe gelaagdheid van Messiaen.

Zoals Octurn, dus. De band van baritonsaxofonist Bo Van der Werf is na vele personeelswissels tot een kleine kern herleid, met Dré Pallemaerts (drums), Jozef Dumoulin (keys) en Fabian Fiorini (piano). Fluitist Magic Malik en Clemens Van der Feen (akoestische bas) zijn te gast. De muziek kenmerkt zich door traag voortschrijdende melodieën en bedachtzaam samenspel, met de electronica van Dumoulin die zo mooi contrasteert met Fiorini’s piano, aangevuld met de zachte klank van Maliks fluit. Vaak is de muziek meditatief en doet ze haast modern-klassiek aan. Af en toe is de band heel fel, zoals in ‘Song 14’, met een ontketende Pallemaerts. Dit is hedendaagse jazz die de luisteraar heerlijk uitdaagt. (pdb)

De retour sur leurs terres en comité plus restreint, ils ont poursuivi leurs recherches minutieuses et éclairées sur les articulations entre rythmes, mélodies et harmonies innovantes avec la complicité de Magic Malik, musicien œuvrant dans un même axe exploratoire. Cette musique également très méditative s’inspire librement du « Livre des Transformations », le Yi Jing (ou Yi King) qui est à la source de la pensée chinoise. Voilà donc une démarche qui évite toute raideur formelle car ces musiciens ont acquis en une vingtaine d’années une grande expérience du jeu collectif dans ce cadre. Une discipline et un long apprentissage qui se rapprochent en effet de la pensée chinoise et des cheminements des moines tibétains. Un album très abouti et réussi. C'est comme un tissage sophistiqué où les fils des musiques produites par chacun s'entremêlent, se répondent, se répliquent, jouant la surprise, la rencontre fortuite, la communion. Ne craignez rien: en aucun cas cette musique n'est inaudible, bien au contraire. Pas besoin d'être musicologue et de comprendre le jeu des structures et des modifications des thèmes pour apprécier la liberté de cette musique, ses sonorités, ses atmosphères, sa douceur. Enfoncez-vous dans votre canapé, l'oreille aux aguets, laissez-vous aller, écoutez, goûtez. C'est comme un alcool fort qui se révèle sous des arômes veloutés. Ca fait du bien. En dat zal u geweten hebben. Zo zagen we de groep – die inmiddels al twee decennia bezig is – aan het werk tijdens het STORM! festival in Oostende waar ze dit nieuwe werkstuk onder de doopvont hielden. Rode draad: de omgang met de veranderlijkheid der dingen.Als er iets dit album en concert kenmerkt is het wel prikkeling en uitdaging. Jazz is zeker niet enkel het teren op neergeschreven muziek, maar vaak ook de teugels wellustig kunnen laten vieren. En net dat is wat deze groep met dit album bewerkstelligt. Songbook Of Changes is allereerst te beschouwen als de weerslag van een proces waarbij elke speler zijn rol en functie heeft. Zoals de bijzondere hoes al suggereert, gaat het hier om een speels omgaan met klanken, sferen en texturen. Zodoende is dit nieuw stuk de weerslag van een erg ambitieus project.Als basis een achtkoppige formatie, hier uitgedund tot een kwartet. Wel worden voor dit project onder meer fluitist Magic Malik en de Nederlandse contrabassist Clemens Van Der Feen aangetrokken. Beiden geven hier een ‘magic touch’ aan wat in wezen een uiterst straffe bezetting is. Zo licht spil en baritonsaxofonist Van Der Werf toe dat het kwartet met de inzet van Malik en Van Der Feen een grotere vrijheid voor elkaar kreeg. Een goede zaak dus, ook al omdat de fluittonen van Malik en zijn bijzondere vocals een zekere lichtheid en luchtheid suggereren.Het is een behoorlijk lastig album in die zin dat er veel gelijktijdig gebeurt. Daardoor heb je als luisteraar de indruk dat Octurn hier een bijzonder chaosrijke geluidsbrij aflevert. Toch valt alles fraai in de plooi, al dient zeker ook gezegd dat Octurn met de klassieke componist Olivier Messiaen geen voor de hand liggende inspiratiebron voorlegt. De focus ligt hier ook op het technische aspect van de uitvoering, al merk je gaandeweg dat het spelen met toevalsfactoren nieuwe, vaak behoorlijk inventieve combinaties blootlegt. En daar is het hier om te doen: het openbaren van nieuwe geluiden, ideëen, kleuren (Black Tara, Red Tara, Blue Tara), .. .Wie op zoek is naar vlot behapbare muziek, loopt hier best in een boog omheen. Wie daarentegen tegen een fikse dosis totaal ongrijpbare muziek kan, heeft hier ongetwijfeld een erg vette kluif aan. Neem bijvoorbeeldM46664a of Lhasa (een verwijzing naar de lokatie als de veel te vroeg gestorven muzikante Lhasa De Sela?). Het blijft een mysterie.Het samenspel tussen de muzikanten bleek live al een genot om te aanschouwen, op het album presenteert zich dat in composities die sommigen wellicht omschrijven als ‘muziek voor lastige intellectuelen met een neurotisch kantje’. Daar is hier gelukkig helemaal niets van aan, het is slechts genieten van prikkelende, weerbarstige muziek die alles wat nog maar vaag naar conformisme neigt per direct de vuilnismand in kiepert.Straf plaatje? Straf plaatje ! Zo hebben wij dat althans graag. Véél liever iets dat de wenkbrauwen doet fronsen, iets dat de luisteraar écht uitdaagt dan een zoveelste oefening in al te stereotiepe radiovriendelijkheid. Voor dat eerste wijzen we we maar al te graag richting het Brusselse Octurn die met het door Koen Gisen gesuperviseerde Songbook Of Changes alvast voor een bizar en behoorlijk eigenzinnig album tekent.

]]> Thu, 16 Nov 2017 15:54:00 +0100 <![CDATA[review concert STORM 11-11-17]]> http://www.octurn.com/#/blog/review-concert-storm-11-11-17 Vervolgens kregen we de Belgische jazzformatieOcturn, met in de geledingen onder meer drummer Dré Pallemaerts, Bo Van Der Werf op baritonsax, de Nederlandse Clemens Van Der Feen op contrabas en Magic Malik (fluit, zang). Al meer dan twintig jaar bezig en met talloze albums achter zich zag je hier een groep die hier zich vooral concentreerde op haar laatste worp. De nieuwe boreling is nog maar net uit op het W.E.R.F. label, maar zoals het ernaar uitziet wordt het een lastige en taaie klus.Maar ook dat is jazz. Het is niet allemaal behapbaar. Je hoorde groepsleden op de tast af gaan en zich laten leiden door zowel partituur als instinct. Met als intentie bakens te verzetten en op zoek te gaan naar prikkelende uitdaging. Nee, écht toegankelijk was dit concert allerminst, maar de manier waarop elk van de groepsleden bijdroeg aan een groter geheel dwong niets anders dan bewondering af. Niet in het minst door de drumshuffles en tikjes van Dré Pallemaerts die als een ritmische meester het hele zaakje onder controle hield.Iets verderop had je Jozef Dumoulin, verscholen achter een batterij knopjes. Daarnaast Van Der Feen, subtiel aanwezig. En dan had je nog Fabian Fiorini op piano en het duo Van Der Werf-Malik die zeer regelmatig het geheel mee inkleurden. Ja, je zou kunnen opwerpen dat het was soms wat bizar en abstract klonk. Maar dit waren composities waar vlees aan zat. Niet zomaar een partituur aframmelen, maar samen musiceren, op zoek gaan en de muzikaliteit botvieren. Deze groep liet het voor de hand liggende helemaal links liggen, waardoor je op zijn minst geïnteresseerd bleef kijken en luisteren. Kortom: complexe, gelaagde en door verandering gekenmerkte muziek met heerlijk prikkelende weerbarstigheid, vol uitdaging en experiment. Zoals het in de jazz ook hoort. Aan het einde kreeg je nét nog een versnellinkje meer, het zat er bijna op en dus konden ze nog even knallen voor het alweer voorbij was.

Octurn tekende voor een van de meest eigenzinnige concerten die we in tijden zagen op een festival van deze omvang. De band van componist en baritonsaxofonist Bo Van Der Werf is al twee decennia een buitenbeentje binnen de Belgische jazz, dat zich net zo graag laat inspireren door hedendaagse muziek als door een Tibetaans monnikenkoor, en intussen uitgedund is tot het kwartet Van Der Werf, Jozef Dumoulin (Fender Rhodes), Fabian Fiorini (piano) en Dre Pallemaerts (drums). Ze kregen gezelschap van bassist Clemens van der Feen en fluitspeler Magic Malic in een concert dat weinig toegevingen deed en bijgevolg ook voor wat onrust bij minder geduldige oren zorgde.Het was vermoedelijk op de tanden bijten voor wie was gekomen voor een avondje jazz, want de composities boden weinig houvast en leken een verborgen eigen logica te volgen. Solo’s kwamen en gingen, het was altijd raden naar wat er zou komen, en dan heb je natuurlijk nog een geval als Dumoulin. Voor de ene een onuitputtelijk vat van creativiteit, een magiër achter een berg hout, ivoor en kabels, voor de ander een stoorzender met onaardse bliepjes en zeurende klankgolven, een geluidengenerator waarmee hij de instrumenten van z’n collega’s kon imiteren (borrelende bassen, scheurend gefluit, bijna normaal klinkend toetsenwerk), maar vooral voor een extra uitdaging zorgde met abstract bijkleuren. Hier en daar zaten er momenten in die hintten naar broeierige grooves, maar ze waren van korte duur.Fiorini contrasteerde het golvende van Dumoulin met soms manisch aangehouden tierlantijnen, Pallemaerts permitteerde zich een enorme vrijheid, Van Der Werfs solo’s voelden aan als oefeningen in fragmentering en Malik combineerde z’n ongrijpbare fluitspurtjes met falsetto-zang en iets dat het midden hield tussen gegrom en geneuzel. Kortom: het was een uitdagende, ongrijpbare en behoorlijk cerebrale bedoening die (wijselijk?) werd afgesloten met een meer dwingende en krachtige punch.

Ainsi le liminaire ''Dalai Lama Long Life'' pose-t-il la charpente de ce rêve cossu qu'est la musique de Tantric College : introduction par un chœur tibétain et la rocaille caractéristique de ce chant bouillonnant et indistinct, d'où les claviers plaquent des nappes sonores travaillant au plus près la matière. Bien sûr, derrière, Dre Pallemaerts fait de la magie avec ses cymbales (ça va mieux en le disant).L'album surprend, ravit, convainc de bout en bout dans cette perspective remarquablement intelligente et originale, dont Bo van der Werf exploite à l'écriture l'ensemble des possibilités. Certains coups d'éclats, qui confirment au passage que sur cette scène et ces esthétiques mouvantes qu'il fait siennes, Jozef Dumoulin fait partie du plus beau qu'on peut entendre derrière 88 touches dans le coin : les deux ''Heart Sutra'', ''True'' dans un genre plus mélodique et traditionnel, la longue suite hypnotique ''Root of Tantra''.

Le jazz est multiple et se réinvente chaque jour. Ce stage proposera des analyses détaillées et mise en pratique de quelques-unes des voies les plus contemporaines du jazz d'aujourd'hui.

- Magic Malik : travail sur les compositions de Magic Malik et leurs spécificités propres ( système des signatures tonales, principes du talea color, des principes d'organisations modulaires, etc.)
- Octurn : travail sur quelques morceaux du large répertoire d'Octurn et leurs spécificités propres (harmonies non fonctionnelles, utilisation des langages harmoniques de Messiaen, polymodalités, ambiguités tonales et modales, principes de hasard et d'indétermination...).

Nous travaillerons également sur la musique de Pierre Van Dormael, Geoffroy De Masure, Guillaume Orti, Stephane Payen, Jozef Dumoulin, Aka Moon,...

One of the richest visual objects in Tibetan Buddhism is the mandala.
A mandala is a symbolic picture of the universe, it represents an imaginary palace that is contemplated during meditation. Each object in the palace has significance, representing an aspect of wisdom or reminding the meditator of a guiding principle. The mandala's purpose is to help transform ordinary minds into enlightened ones and to assist with healing. According
to Buddhist scripture, mandalas constructed from sand transmit positive
energies to the environment and to the people who view them. They are believed to effect purification and healing.

The Sand Mandala is a Tibetan Buddhist tradition involving the creation and destruction of mandalas made from colored sand. A sand mandala is ritualisticallydestroyed once it has been completed and its accompanying ceremonies and viewing are finished to symbolize the Buddhist doctrinal belief in the transitory nature of material life. From all the artistic traditions of Tantric
Buddhism, it ranks as one of the most unique and exquisite. In Tibetan this art
is called dul-tson-kyil-khor, which literally means "mandala of colored powders." Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over a period of days or weeks.
 
The Sand Mandala is regarded within Tibetan Buddhism as sacred and, until 40 years ago, was rarely seen outside the monasteries. Architectural in structure, their complex and richly coloured designs have remained unchanged for over 500 years, the skills and secret meanings passed faithfully down through the generations from teacher to student. The monks make these exquisite mandalas from memory, approaching the task within the framework of ancient ceremonial Tantric ritual, and bringing to theprocess extraordinary patience and concentration.
 
The sacred mandala contains deities, with the principal deity in the centre of the pattern. The deities who reside in the palace embody philosophical views and serve as role models. It is, in essence, a visualization tool, a symbol of a perfect world in which we are all perfect beings practicing the pure loving kindness and compassion that is innate in all living beings.

Constructing a sand mandala
there are many different designs of mandala, each with different lessons to teach. The process begins with an opening ceremony, during which the lamas consecrate the site and call forth the forces of goodness. The monks chant and dance in resplendent dress, and begin the work by drawing an outline of the mandala on the wooden platform, which requires the remainder of the day. The following days see the laying of the colored sands, which is effected by pouring the sand from traditional metal funnels called chak-pur. Each monk holds a chak-pur in one hand, while running a metal rod on its grated surface; the vibration causes the sands to flow like liquid.Once the mandala is complete the monks ask for the deities' healing blessings during a ceremony. As the monks chant, it is dismantled, first by the removal of each of the deities represented in
the mandala and then with a 'dorje', the head lama cuts through the main lines,
thus cutting the energy of the mandala. The destruction of the mandala serves
as a reminder of the impermanence of life. The coloured sand is swept up into
an urn and dispersed into flowing water - a way of extending the healing powers
to the whole world, and a lesson about the impermanence of life.
 
The mandala construction process as it happened in Brussels,
14-18 november 2012
 
1) Opening Ceremony :14 november, from 10.00am
The monks begin by consecrating the site
of the mandala sand painting with chants, music, and mantra recitation.
2) Drawing of the Lines : 14 november, from 10.00.am
Immediately after the Opening Ceremony
the monks start drawing the line design for the mandala. This is very exacting
work that takes about three hours to complete.
3) Mandala Construction : 15-16-17 october, 10.00am-5.00pm
Throughout its creation, the monks pour
millions of grains of sand from traditional metal funnels called chakpur.
4) Mandala Completion : 18 october, from 10.00am
The monks conclude their creation of the
mandala with a consecration ceremony.
5) Dismantling the Mandala : 18 october, from 10.00am
During the closing ceremony, the monks
dismantle the mandala, sweeping up the colored sands to symbolize the
impermanence of all that exists. When requested, half of the sand is
distributed to the audience as blessings for personal health and healing.
6) Dispersal of the Sand : 18 october, from 10.00am
The remaining sand is carried in a
procession by the monks, accompanied by guests, to a flower garden, where it is ceremonially poured to disperse the healing energies of the mandala .

2) Drawing of the lines : 14 november, from 10.00.am

In june last year I went to visit the monastery in dharamsala to meet the monks of gyuto to prepare the project we did in april and may this year in grenoble, antwerp, kortrijk, louvain-la-neuve and brussels. I spend a week in the monastery sharing with the monks their daily life. I filmed a lot of ceremonies, and videast filipa cardoso made a very nice short film out of the many rolls! In her film you can really feel the peaceful and intense vibrations emanating from their rituals.
